Fixed or variable electricity price: the record for the last twelve months
Nobody knows what power will cost next winter, but Statistics Sweden shows what each contract type actually cost.

For an electrically heated house in SE4 using 1,500 kWh a month, energy over the twelve months from September 2025 to August 2026 cost SEK 22,830 on a variable contract and SEK 23,972 on a one-year fixed price, VAT included, according to Statistics Sweden’s figures on what retailers billed. The cheapest was the fixed 3 yrs contract. These figures cover retail energy only: the grid fee and energy tax of 36.0 öre/kWh are the same whatever you sign. The fixed price in the statistics is the average of contracts signed each month, which makes it a fair comparison for a customer who renews every year. Choose zone, home and consumption in the tool to see the ranking for your own case. A variable price can turn expensive in a cold winter; a fixed price pays for certainty.

Assumptions
Statistics Sweden monthly retail prices up to August 2026, with 25% VAT added. Retail energy only: grid fees and energy tax are the same whatever the contract. The fixed price is the average for contracts signed each month, not the price of a contract you already hold. Method and sources
Twelve months for a heated house, every zone
| Zone | Variable | Fixed 1 yr | Fixed 3 yrs | Default | Cheapest |
|---|---|---|---|---|---|
| SE1 | SEK 12,390 | SEK 16,436 | SEK 16,112 | SEK 15,853 | variable |
| SE2 | SEK 12,506 | SEK 16,121 | SEK 15,801 | SEK 14,946 | variable |
| SE3 | SEK 19,149 | SEK 20,072 | SEK 18,919 | SEK 22,905 | fixed 3 yrs |
| SE4 | SEK 22,830 | SEK 23,972 | SEK 22,686 | SEK 25,033 | fixed 3 yrs |
The ranking shifts between zones and between years. In the south, where prices swing most, a single expensive winter month often decides the whole year, so it makes sense to look beyond one year.
Four years in SE4: variable against one-year fixed
| Year | Variable, before VAT | Fixed 1 yr, before VAT |
|---|---|---|
| 2022 | 179.2 öre/kWh | 335.2 öre/kWh |
| 2023 | 92.9 öre/kWh | 180.3 öre/kWh |
| 2024 | 72.1 öre/kWh | 99.6 öre/kWh |
| 2025 | 83.2 öre/kWh | 97.9 öre/kWh |
In SE4 the one-year fixed price for new contracts has been above the variable price every year since 2022, with the widest gap in 2022 itself. In hindsight, certainty has cost money. That says nothing sure about next winter, but it shows a fixed price is not a way to pay less on average.
What the statistics do not tell you
Statistics Sweden reports averages. Your own mark-up and monthly fee may be higher or lower; see mark-up and fees. Hourly or quarter-hour contracts are not a separate group in the statistics; the guide to quarter-hour prices covers when they pay. Month by month, everything is on electricity prices by month.
