237.6 öre/kWh with VAT is the cost of each kilowatt-hour in a Karlstad flat when retail energy matches the Statistics Sweden (SCB) variable-contract average for SE3 in August 2026, 98.7 öre/kWh before VAT. The Karlstad grid area belongs to Karlstad Elnät AB and lies in SE3, according to Svenska kraftnät’s Nätområden.se. What lifts the price is the grid’s transfer fee (överföringsavgift, the per-kWh grid charge): 55.35 öre/kWh before VAT in the Energy Markets Inspectorate’s data, and only 3 of 136 grids charge flats more. The subscription is low in return, SEK 1,650 a year with VAT including authority charges. For the 2,000 kWh standard case the grid costs SEK 3,034 a year, rank 98 of 136, and 45.6 % of it follows usage. In Värmland county only Torsby has reduced energy tax, so Karlstad pays 36.0 öre/kWh. A flat using 2,000 kWh a year pays about SEK 533 a month.

On a quarter-hour contract (kvartspris) it can pay to shift heavy appliances such as the washing machine to cheap periods, but the grid part per kWh is the same around the clock in Ei’s data. How other grids split subscription and transfer is explained under the grid fee.

Frequently asked questions

Why is the transfer fee so high in Karlstad?

The regulator’s data shows the amounts but not the company’s reasons. Karlstads Elnät charges 55.35 öre/kWh before VAT while keeping a low subscription of SEK 1,650 a year with VAT. It therefore puts more of its cost on usage than most grids do. For the reasoning behind that choice, Karlstads Elnät itself is the one to ask.

How much does a Karlstad flat save by using 500 kWh less a year?

At the SCB average for SE3 each kilowatt-hour is worth 237.6 öre/kWh with VAT, so 500 kWh less cuts the yearly cost by about SEK 1,188. Of the price per kWh, 29.1 % goes to the grid, a larger share than in cities where the grid charges mainly through the subscription. Saving power therefore pays off more in Karlstad than in many other places.

Does Torsby pay less electricity tax than Karlstad?

Yes. Torsby is the only municipality in Värmland county listed in chapter 11, section 4 of the Energy Tax Act. Households there get a 9.6 öre/kWh deduction and pay 26.4 öre/kWh. In Karlstad and the county’s other municipalities full energy tax applies, 36.0 öre/kWh before VAT, whichever grid you are on.

How much did Karlstad’s transfer fee rise in 2026?

From 50.30 öre/kWh to 55.35 öre/kWh before VAT between 2025 and 2026, according to the Energy Markets Inspectorate. The subscription and authority charges rose too, so the flat’s total grid cost went from SEK 2,783 to SEK 3,034 a year with VAT, an increase of 9.0 %. Ei records 6,086 flat customers on this grid.
