289.9 öre/kWh including VAT is what a Malmö flat on a 16 A fuse pays for each kilowatt-hour it uses when retail energy costs the Statistics Sweden (SCB) average for a variable contract in SE4 in August 2026, 113.0 öre/kWh before VAT. Nätområden.se, the national grid-area map, places Malmö in the Malmö-Burlöv area, owned by E.ON Energidistribution AB, in SE4 at the southern tip of the country. The Energy Markets Inspectorate (Ei) reports E.ON’s local grids in three price groups; we use the group called Syd & Mellersta, but the price list on your own bill is what counts. There the transfer fee (the per-kWh grid charge) is 82.9 öre/kWh before VAT, among the higher ones in Sweden, while the subscription is low, so 61.4 % of a flat’s grid cost follows its usage. With SEK 1,304 in fixed charges and energy tax of 36.0 öre/kWh, a flat using 2,000 kWh a year pays about SEK 592 a month.

E.ON’s four standard cases in the south
| Standard case | Fixed per year | Transfer | Grid total per year | Rank |
|---|---|---|---|---|
| Flat 16 A, 2,000 kWh | SEK 1,304 | 103.7 öre/kWh | SEK 3,377 | 112 of 136 |
| House 16 A, 5,000 kWh | SEK 2,624 | 87.2 öre/kWh | SEK 6,981 | 89 of 116 |
| House 20 A, 20,000 kWh | SEK 9,404 | 30.7 öre/kWh | SEK 15,544 | 104 of 115 |
| House 25 A, 20,000 kWh | SEK 12,119 | 30.7 öre/kWh | SEK 18,259 | 107 of 117 |
The table shows an unusual profile. For the flat and the smaller house, E.ON collects much of its grid cost per kilowatt-hour; for houses on 20 and 25 A fuses the fixed charge dominates and the transfer fee drops sharply. A Malmö tenant can therefore shift the grid cost more through their own usage than a household on a heavy standing charge.
SE4 against SE3: the retail gap
Malmö is in the southernmost bidding zone (elområde). According to SCB, a variable contract for flats cost 113.0 öre/kWh in SE4 in August 2026, 14.3 öre/kWh more than in SE3 the same month, both before VAT and including the retailer’s mark-up. The monthly series is on the SE4 price page.
Where each unit costs most, and how to use fewer
When every kWh carries the spot price, a high transfer fee, energy tax and VAT, avoidable use is worth cutting. Cooler, shorter showers show up at once; see what a shower costs. You cannot change grid company, but you pick your retailer freely; newcomers start on a default contract (anvisat avtal) until they choose. Lund shares the zone but has a different grid company with a very different fixed-to-variable split: compare electricity in Lund and grid fees across Sweden.
