Electricity price in SE2: one spot price, two tax rates

SE2 covers southern and central Norrland. Within the zone, tax can differ by almost ten öre.

An electrically heated house in SE2 on a variable contract was billed 57.7 öre/kWh before VAT for its energy in August 2026, according to Statistics Sweden. The spot price is the same throughout the zone, but the all-in price is not. Umeå lies in Västerbotten county, where households get the northern deduction and pay 26.4 öre/kWh in energy tax. Sundsvall is in Västernorrland, where only Sollefteå, Ånge and Örnsköldsvik have the deduction, so 36.0 öre/kWh applies. With each city’s grid fee from the Energy Markets Inspectorate, a 20 A house pays 127.7 öre/kWh in Umeå and 143.5 öre/kWh in Sundsvall, VAT included. Over 20,000 kWh a year the gap, fixed fees included, comes to SEK 7,108. Pick your grid and enter today’s spot price.

In Umeå two factors pull the same way: the tax deduction and a grid among the cheaper ones in the country. In Sundsvall both tax and transfer fee are higher. It shows why an electricity price for “Norrland” says little about your own bill; Umeå and Sundsvall have their own pages with more detail.

Checking whether your municipality has the lower tax

The deduction covers the whole of Norrbotten, Västerbotten and Jämtland counties, Sollefteå, Ånge and Örnsköldsvik in Västernorrland, Ljusdal in Gävleborg, Malung-Sälen, Mora, Orsa and Älvdalen in Dalarna, and Torsby in Värmland. If you live there, your grid bill shows a lower energy tax line; switch on the setting in the calculator. The guide to energy tax on electricity explains the rule and what the cut from 2025 meant.

The winter 2026 support in SE2

For consumption in January and February 2026 the state paid 14 öre per kWh to households in SE2, the same as SE1 and much less than in the south, where prices ran higher. The cap was 10,000 kWh per home, so a heated house in Sundsvall or Umeå using the maximum received SEK 1,400. Försäkringskassan paid it without any application, and it did not change the price per kWh on the bill. More on the electricity support.

Frequently asked questions

Which cities are in SE2?

Svenska kraftnät’s map on Nätområden.se puts the Umeå and Sundsvall urban grid areas in SE2. Your zone follows your local grid, so in rare cases two addresses in the same municipality belong to different zones. Check your grid area on Nätområden.se if you are unsure.

Is electricity dearer in SE2 than in SE1?

It depends on the year. Over the twelve months from September 2025 to August 2026, the SCB average for a variable contract for a heated house was 55.1 öre/kWh in SE1, 55.6 öre/kWh in SE2 and 85.1 öre/kWh in SE3, before VAT. For your own bill, tax and grid often weigh more than that gap.

Why does Örnsköldsvik pay less energy tax than Sundsvall?

The Energy Tax Act lists the municipalities where the 9.6 öre/kWh deduction applies. In Västernorrland county only Sollefteå, Ånge and Örnsköldsvik are listed. Sundsvall, Timrå, Härnösand and Kramfors are not, so they pay full energy tax despite sharing the zone and its spot price.
