150.3 öre/kWh, VAT included, is what a 16 A flat in Umeå pays when retail energy costs the Statistics Sweden (SCB) average for a variable contract in SE2 in August 2026, 75.7 öre/kWh before VAT. The Umeå grid area is owned by Umeå Energi Elnät AB and sits in bidding zone SE2, according to Svenska kraftnät’s Nätområden.se. Two things keep the price down. Umeå is in Västerbotten county, where the Energy Tax Act gives households a deduction, so energy tax is 26.4 öre/kWh rather than 36.0 öre/kWh. And the local grid is among the cheapest in Sweden for flats: the Energy Markets Inspectorate (Ei) lists SEK 1,716 a year with VAT for its 2,000 kWh standard case, rank 2 of 136, even after a 9.9 % rise from 2025. At 2,000 kWh a year the whole bill comes to about SEK 356 a month. Type in today’s spot price from your retailer to recalculate.

The cheapest grids for flats in 2026
| Rank | Grid company | Cost per year incl. VAT |
|---|---|---|
| 1 | LKAB Nät AB | SEK 1,621 |
| 2 | Umeå Energi Elnät AB | SEK 1,716 |
| 3 | Luleå Energi Elnät AB | SEK 1,814 |
| 4 | Halmstads Energi och Miljö Nät AB | SEK 1,829 |
| 5 | Lidköping Elnät AB | SEK 1,842 |
Umeå Energi Elnät is not a small grid. Ei counts 31,439 connection points in its flat case, and only 6 grids in Ei’s data have more flat customers. Of the yearly cost, SEK 1,264 is fixed, and transfer costs 22.6 öre/kWh with VAT. Both parts are low, so even a light user ends up with a modest price per kilowatt-hour.
Variable or fixed contract in SE2
| Contract | Average before VAT | Energy for 2,000 kWh incl. VAT |
|---|---|---|
| Variable price | 72.8 öre/kWh | SEK 1,819 |
| Fixed price, 1 year | 88.3 öre/kWh | SEK 2,207 |
| Fixed price, 3 years | 87.3 öre/kWh | SEK 2,182 |
| Default contract (anvisat) | 84.2 öre/kWh | SEK 2,106 |
Over that period a variable price was the cheapest option for a flat in SE2 and a one-year fixed price the dearest, a gap of SEK 388 over the year. If you moved to Umeå and never picked a retailer, you are on the default contract (anvisat avtal). The ranking can differ in other years; the fixed versus variable comparison covers more periods.
Tax, and the neighbouring city
Umeå shares its spot price with Sundsvall but not its tax level: in Västernorrland county the deduction applies in only three municipalities, and Sundsvall is not among them.
